On 9 February 2018, one week to Africa Barista Challenge at the 16th African Fine Coffee Conference and Exhibition Simon Eidodo was tussling it out with 14 other baristas for the Uganda National Barista Champion title. Before he was announced as the champion Simon exuded calm and confidence. It was almost as if he knew he had bagged the title.

Uganda Coffee Development Authority came third in the recently concluded Jinja Agricultural Show. The show now in its 25th year attracted hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of show goers for the weeklong event. Each year the organisers of the show – the Uganda National Farmers Federation gives award to the top exhibitors and UCDA emerged third out of a total of 650 exhibitors.
In October 2015, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Uganda issued a directive to accelerate coffee production from the current 3.5 million 60 kg bags to 20 million bags by 2020. To actualise this directive, in December 2015, UCDA in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit convened a stakeholders’ meeting in which an agenda for a Coffee Lab was agreed upon. The stakeholders agreed on potential strategies for government action in FY 2016/2017 pending design of a Coffee 2020 Roadmap (effectively, the results of the aforementioned Coffee Lab).
On July 5, 2017 Uganda Coffee Development Authority and Uganda Cooperative Alliance signed a Memorandum of Understanding in a bid to boost coffee production countrywide. “We are excited to be partnering with Uganda Cooperative Alliance,” said Dr Emmanuel Iyamulemye Niyibigira, the Managing Director of UCDA. “We believe that through this collaboration we will strengthen farmers through recruiting farmer organisations, cooperatives and associations across the country.”
Uganda Coffee Development Authority participated in the AFCCA Annual Conference and Exhibition in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from 2nd -5th February 2016 at the New Landmark Conference and Exhibition Centrewhere Uganda’s finest coffees were showcased to attract buyers from international to buy coffee from Uganda so that farmers can earn premium prices.
